The Overview
Centralized Net Worth Tracking for a seamless financial overview

My Wealth is an ambitious project aimed at creating a holistic personal finance platform within Yahoo Finance. It consolidates key financial aspects like Cash Flow, Net Worth, and Credit Score Monitoring into one central hub. The overarching goal of the platform is to give users an actionable and comprehensive view of their financial health, empowering them to make more informed financial decisions.

We chose to launch the Net Worth Tracking feature first, leveraging our existing portfolio users who were already tracking their investments. The goal was to provide a seamless way for these users to aggregate their accounts (e.g., savings, loans, credit cards, and real estate) and get a full snapshot of their financial health.

Why Net Worth first
First step into accomplish ultimate financial goal
Each of the three core functionalities within My Wealth—Net Worth Tracking, Cash Flow Tracking, and Credit Score Monitoring—contributes to different financial goals for users.
1. Understand Financial Standing - Net Worth Tracking
2. Helping people save money - Cash Flow Tracking
3. Growing Wealth - Credit Score Monitoring
The problem
Fragmented financial data

Research showed that Yahoo Finance’s portfolio users were highly engaged, but many lacked a comprehensive view of their total financial health. Net Worth Tracking addressed this gap by allowing users to view their assets and liabilities in one place, providing a clear picture of their financial standing.

By starting with Net Worth, we aimed to solve two critical problems:

Fragmented Financial Data: Users struggled to aggregate financial information spread across multiple platforms.

(For phase 2) Tracking Financial Progress: Users wanted to see how decisions (e.g., debt repayment or investment growth) affected their overall net worth with the integration of other functionalities.

Cherry on top
We already have one piece in the pie

Yahoo Finance Portfolio has already completed one piece in the pie for us: stock tracking, now we only need to focus on completing the rest of users financial picture.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHT #1
Aggregate financial information with Simple Onboarding
For phase 1, given the familiarity of Yahoo Finance’s portfolio tool, we designed the onboarding experience to prioritize seamlessness and simplicity for existing users.
Auto-Integration of Portfolio Accounts
To reduce friction, we auto-populated portfolio users’ existing accounts into the Net Worth tracker. This created a more engaging first experience, as users immediately saw value without manual setup.
Dynamic Onboarding Flows - No Empty Screens
We accounted for different user types (active investors vs. casual users). Even for users who only followed stocks informally, we ensured they never encountered an empty Net Worth page by guiding them to link additional accounts. Whether users were logged in, logged out, or returning after a break, the onboarding flow adapted to their status to provide a smooth and continuous experience.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHT #2
Scalable Design with a Heuristic Mindset
From the outset, I adopted a heuristic design approach to ensure that shared components—like the Account Settings page and Individual Bank Account Page—could be reused across future features like Cash Flow and Credit Score Monitoring. This not only streamlined development but also ensured a consistent user experience across the My Wealth platform.
Site Map Development
I created a comprehensive site map to identify which components would be universal across features. This helped align the team on what would be part of Phase 1 (Net Worth) and what could be expanded later.
Besides, I am able to detect shared pages (e.g., linking accounts, managing settings) to ensure consistency across other functions that will be designed later to an error-free hand-off to cross functional teams.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHT #3
Ensuring Accurate and Reliable Data
Given the sensitivity of financial data, it was crucial to ensure that users always received accurate and up-to-date information in the Net Worth tracker. To achieve this, I prioritized error handling and data synchronization.
Robust Error Handling
Anticipating potential issues like failed account syncing, I designed clear error messages and troubleshooting flows to guide users through resolving data issues.
Bi-Directional Syncing with Portfolio
Since users might update account information in their portfolio, we implemented bi-directional syncing to ensure that any changes were reflected across both Net Worth and Portfolio tools.
The Impact
Adoption, Engagement

While the Net Worth Tracking feature has not fully launched yet, we expect several positive outcomes based on early user research and design testing:

Increased Feature Adoption: By targeting existing Yahoo Finance portfolio users, we anticipate a 20-25% increase in adoption of the Net Worth feature within the first three weeks of launch due to the seamless onboarding experience and pre-populated portfolio data.

Higher Account Connections: Through a smooth account linking process and dynamic onboarding flows, we expect users to connect additional financial accounts (beyond their portfolio), leading to a 15-20% increase in total account connections.

Improved Engagement: With users able to easily track their full financial picture, we forecast a 20% increase in time spent on the platform as users engage with the Net Worth feature and explore connected functionalities.

Reduced Drop-Offs During Onboarding: By ensuring users never see an empty Net Worth page and providing a personalized experience, we expect to see a significant reduction in onboarding drop-offs, leading to a more engaged user base.

Enhanced Data Accuracy: Thanks to robust error handling and bi-directional syncing with the portfolio tool, we expect fewer user-reported issues (estimated 30-40% reduction) and a higher satisfaction rate with data accuracy.

Conclusion
Building a Scalable, User-Centric Financial Tool
By focusing on Net Worth Tracking as the core feature of My Wealth, we successfully created a tool that not only gave users a comprehensive view of their financial health but also set the foundation for future features like Cash Flow and Credit Score Monitoring. My leadership in designing for scalability, ensuring data accuracy, and driving user engagement highlights my ability to deliver impactful, user-centric products, making me well-suited for senior product design roles.
